Watermark PDFs with text that stays sharp

Stamp CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or a client name across every page as real vector text. Zoom to 1600% and the letters are still crisp — because they are text, not a picture of text.

Text objects, drawn on top

Each watermark is a real text run added to the page's content stream, so it prints sharply and can be selected. Page content underneath is never re-rendered. The overlay is not a security control — anyone with the original file can produce a clean copy.

Why most watermarks look cheap

Plenty of tools implement a watermark by rendering your page to an image, pasting a picture of the word on top, and rebuilding the PDF around it. The file gains a blurry stamp and loses its text layer in one move. At 100% zoom nobody notices; at print size the word is visibly soft, and at 400% it is a mosaic.

Adding a text object is both simpler and better. The watermark inherits the page's vector nature, so it stays crisp at any zoom, prints at the printer's full resolution, and adds a few kilobytes instead of a few megabytes.

What you can adjust

  • Wording — “CONFIDENTIAL”, “DRAFT — not for distribution”, a client or reviewer name.
  • Size and opacity — large and faint for a background mark, small and solid for a corner stamp.
  • Single centred or tiled across the page, which is much harder to crop out of a screenshot.
  • Colour — a neutral grey reads as official; a red mark reads as a warning.

How to watermark

  1. Add the PDFThe preview shows a live page with your watermark drawn at the chosen size, opacity and angle.
  2. Type and adjustChanges appear immediately — there is no need to export to find out whether 22% opacity is too faint.
  3. ExportEvery page receives the same overlay; the original stays untouched.

FAQ

Can the watermark be removed later?

Yes, easily — by anyone who has the original, and often by anyone who has the watermarked file and a PDF editor. A watermark signals status; it does not enforce it.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. The watermark is a new layer drawn over whatever the page contains, so it sits on top of a scan just as cleanly as on a text page.

Can I use an image or logo instead of text?

Not in this build. Text watermarks stay sharp and add almost nothing to the file; a logo would need embedding and would not scale as gracefully.
