Swap a page without touching the other eighty-nine
Replace an outdated page with the revised sheet from another PDF. Every other page is copied across unchanged, and both source files stay as they were.
Why replace instead of re-exporting
The obvious fix for one bad page is to open the source document, change it and export the whole thing again. That works only if you still have the source, still have the fonts, and can reproduce the layout exactly. Re-exporting from Word or InDesign routinely shifts a line break, re-flows a table, and changes the file's pagination — so the “fix” introduces forty new differences.
Replacing a page sidesteps all of it. The other pages are never opened for editing; they are copied from the original file into a new one, and only the named pages come from the second document.
How to replace a page
- Add both PDFsThe first is the document you are fixing; the second holds the replacement page. The preview shows both, numbered.
- Name the target and the source“Replace page 3” with “page 1 of file 2”. For several pages, list them in matching order:
3, 5←1, 2. - ExportYou get one file with the same page count as the base document, page 3 replaced and everything else intact.
Matching page counts, matching sizes
A swap is one-for-one: extra source pages are ignored, and if the source runs short the remaining targets keep their original content. Page size is not forced — a Letter replacement inside an A4 document stays Letter, which is usually what you want for a scanned insert but looks odd for a re-typeset page. If the replacement was exported from the same layout tool, the sizes will match.
| Item | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Mapping | Target pages and source pages matched in order |
| Page count | Unchanged — it is a swap, not an insert |
| Page size | Kept per page; no rescaling |
| Other pages | Copied from the base file as objects |
| Sources | Neither file is modified |
FAQ
Can I replace three pages at once?
Yes. List the targets and the sources in matching order — 3, 5, 9 from the base and 1-3 from the second file. Pairing is positional, not by page number.
What if the replacement page is a different size?
It stays its own size. Most viewers show mixed-size pages without complaint, but a printed document will look uneven. Re-export the replacement at the same page size if that matters.
Does this work for a page that was scanned into an image?
Yes — the page is copied as an object whether its content is text, vector art or a scan. The replacement can be any PDF page, including a scanned one.
